Is there anything more frustrating then being told to do something, but not how?
I’ve been using versions of this self-assessment tool for over a decade, to help students improve their GCSE English Language Writing tasks. (I’ve even seen students draw a version of this in the planning box for their exam papers) It works best when a student looks at it BEFORE they start writing, but the Self-Assessment Square is an excellent method of double-checking for things they’ve overlooked once they’ve finished. It’s obvious to students that they might check spellings, but these are designed to specifically match other things examiners are looking for (and they tend to be the things students often forget to do when they are under ‘exam stress’…
Punctuation? Only used commas and full stops? Ouch: get the full range in!
Sentence and Paragraph Lengths? Show your marker you are making deliberate decisions to add flow, interest, and rhythm to your work.
Impressive Vocabulary? If your best four words aren’t actually that impressive, you have time to make some upgrades; they will help raise your mark.
Language Techniques? There are dozens you could use, but if you haven’t at least got these four in, your mark’s going to suffer. Do something about it now; don't wish you had whilst you’re waiting for your mark.
